What's included in our frozen pipe repair in Oklahoma City

A frozen pipe is really two problems. The first is the ice blocking the line. The second is the damage the ice may already have done. Our frozen pipe service handles both in one visit:

  • Locating the freeze. We trace the dead fixtures back along the supply line to find the frozen section, whether it is in an attic, a crawlspace, an exterior wall, a garage ceiling or the riser where the line enters the house.
  • Safe thawing. We use controlled heat, never an open flame inside a wall, and keep a faucet open so the water has somewhere to go as the ice melts.
  • Split and leak check. Once water is flowing, we pressurize the line and inspect the thawed section and its fittings for cracks, pushed-out joints and pinholes.
  • Repair or replacement. We cut out damaged copper, PEX, CPVC or galvanized pipe and replace it with properly supported new pipe and fittings.
  • Freeze-proofing. Before we leave, we show you what caused it and what will stop it from happening again.

Signs you need frozen pipe repair

Most frozen pipes announce themselves on the first cold morning. Call for help if you notice any of these during a freeze:

  • A faucet or shower that runs at a trickle or not at all while others still work
  • No water anywhere in the house, which often points to a frozen main line or riser
  • Frost on an exposed pipe, or a pipe that looks swollen or bulged
  • A toilet that will not refill, or a washing machine that will not fill
  • Damp drywall, a water stain on the ceiling, or a hissing sound inside a wall
  • An outdoor hose bib that will not run or is dripping from the wall

Here is the catch. A cracked pipe usually does not leak while it is frozen solid. It starts spraying when it thaws, often hours later or while you are at work. According to IBHS, a crack just one-eighth of an inch wide can release more than 250 gallons of water a day. That is why we look for splits before and during thawing, not after.

Do this right now if a pipe is frozen: open the faucet it feeds, find your main water shutoff, and keep a flashlight nearby. If you see water, a bulge or a crack, shut the main off. Never thaw pipes with a torch, a candle or any open flame. That is how frozen pipes turn into house fires.

Our frozen pipe thawing and repair process

  1. Talk it through on the phone. We ask which fixtures are dead, where they sit in the house, and whether you see water. If there is any chance of a split, we walk you through shutting off the main before we arrive.
  2. Find the frozen section. We check the usual suspects first: lines on north and west walls, attic runs, garage ceilings, crawlspace supply lines and the riser where the water line comes up through the slab.
  3. Thaw it safely. We apply steady, controlled heat working from the open faucet back toward the frozen spot so melting water can drain out instead of building pressure.
  4. Pressure-check the line. With water restored, we watch the thawed run and nearby fittings for weeping joints, pinholes and longitudinal splits.
  5. Repair the damage. Cracked sections are cut out and replaced. If drywall has to come off to reach the pipe, we keep the opening as small as practical.
  6. Stop the repeat. We recommend the fix that fits: insulation, sealing the draft that caused it, rerouting the line into heated space, or a frost-free hose bib.

Thawing and repair methods compared

The right method depends on where the pipe is and what it is made of. Here is how the common approaches stack up.

MethodBest forWatch out for
Warm air or a hair dryer on an exposed pipeShort, visible runs under sinks or in a garageSlow on long runs, and no help when the freeze is inside a wall
Controlled professional thawingFrozen sections in walls, ceilings, crawlspaces or risersNeeds someone who can locate the freeze first
Space heater in the roomRaising the temperature of a cold laundry room or bathFire risk if left unattended or placed near anything that burns
Open flame or torchNever appropriate for thawingCan ignite framing and insulation, and can overheat and damage pipe
Cut out and replace the split sectionAny pipe that cracked or pushed a fittingMust be done before water is turned back on fully

When a pipe in the same spot freezes winter after winter, patching it again is rarely the cheapest long-term answer. Rerouting a short run into heated space or adding plumbing winterization and pipe insulation usually ends the problem for good. If the freeze is at an outdoor spigot, a frost-free hose bib is the standard fix.

What affects the cost of frozen pipe repair

We price the actual job after we see it, and we explain your options before we start. The main things that move the cost:

  • Where the freeze is. A pipe under a sink takes minutes to reach. A line inside a finished ceiling or under a slab takes more.
  • Whether the pipe split. Thawing alone is quicker than thawing plus cutting out and replacing damaged pipe.
  • Pipe material. PEX often survives a freeze that would split copper or CPVC, and old galvanized pipe may be too corroded to repair cleanly.
  • Water damage. If the line already burst, the job may include burst pipe repair and opening wet drywall.
  • Prevention upgrades. Insulation, rerouting or a frost-free hose bib add to the visit but prevent the next call.

Financing is available for larger repairs.

Frozen pipes in Oklahoma City: local factors

Oklahoma City does not get long, steady winters. It gets sudden arctic outbreaks after mild weeks, and that pattern catches houses off guard. On February 16, 2021, Oklahoma City dropped to minus 14°F, its second-lowest reading on record behind minus 17°F in February 1899, according to the Oklahoma Climatological Survey. Homes that had never had a frozen pipe lost water for days that week.

A lot of local houses were built for heat, not cold. Many have water lines in attics, in exterior walls on the north and west sides, or in garages that sit open to the wind. Slab-on-grade homes often have a hose bib or laundry line in an outside wall with little insulation. Crawlspace homes in the older parts of Oklahoma City have supply lines exposed to cold air coming through vents. Wind matters too. A 20°F night with a stiff north wind can freeze a line that a still 15°F night would not.

IBHS, citing research from the University of Illinois Building Research Council, treats 20°F as the temperature alert threshold for pipes in southern homes. When the forecast heads below that in Oklahoma City, drip the faucets on outside walls, open the cabinet doors under sinks, and keep the thermostat steady overnight.

When a frozen pipe becomes an emergency

A frozen pipe with no visible damage can usually wait for a scheduled visit, provided you keep the faucet open and the house warm. It becomes an emergency the moment you see water, hear hissing, or lose water to the whole house. In those cases, shut the main off and call. Our 24/7 emergency plumbing line is answered around the clock all winter. If you want to know who you are calling, meet the team behind the company.

Why Oklahoma City chooses us for frozen pipe repair

24/7

Answering at 3 a.m. on the coldest night

Freeze calls do not wait for Monday. We pick up nights, weekends and holidays all winter, and we keep thawing equipment and repair fittings on hand so a frozen line becomes a working line in one trip whenever possible. When you call, you talk to a plumber who can tell you what to shut off right now, not a message service.

Since 1985

Plumbers who have seen every kind of freeze

Our plumbing experience goes back to 1985, and a licensed plumber leads every freeze call. Four decades of Oklahoma winters means we know where pipes hide in local homes: attic runs over garages, slab-on-grade hose bibs, crawlspace supply lines and laundry rooms on outside walls. That is where we look first, before the thaw turns a frozen line into a flood.

These guys were great! A breath of fresh air from the usual contractor/service. They cared about fixing the problem not how much they can charge. I had a same day service need, leak in between floors, the day before a trip. They came out same day and presented multiple solutions as well as keen explanations.

Straight answers

Frozen Pipe Repair questions, answered

How do I know if my pipes are frozen?

The most common sign is a faucet that gives only a trickle or nothing at all when it is below freezing outside, while other fixtures still work. You may also see frost on an exposed pipe, a bulge in the line, or damp drywall near an outside wall. If water stops in several fixtures at once, the freeze is likely near where the main line enters the house.

Can I thaw a frozen pipe myself?

You can try gentle heat on a pipe you can see, such as a hair dryer or warm towels, with the faucet open so melting water can flow. Never use an open flame, a propane torch or a heat gun on a wall. If you cannot find the frozen section, or the pipe is cracked, shut off the main water valve and call a plumber.

What temperature do pipes freeze at in Oklahoma?

Research from the University of Illinois Building Research Council, cited by IBHS, treats 20°F as the temperature alert threshold for homes in southern climates like ours. Pipes in unheated attics, crawlspaces and exterior walls can freeze sooner, especially overnight with wind. In February 2021 Oklahoma City dropped to minus 14°F, which froze lines in homes that had never had a problem.

Should I shut off my water if a pipe is frozen?

If you suspect a split, yes. Shut off the main valve before the ice melts, because a cracked pipe usually does not leak until it thaws. If the pipe is frozen but intact, leave the faucet open a little so pressure can escape while it thaws. Knowing where your main shutoff is before winter is one of the best things you can do.

How do I keep my pipes from freezing again?

Insulate exposed pipes in attics, crawlspaces and garages, seal drafts where lines pass through outside walls, disconnect garden hoses, and drip faucets on outside walls during hard freezes. For lines that freeze every year, we can reroute the pipe, add insulation, or install a frost-free hose bib. Our plumbing winterization service covers the whole house before the season starts.
