What's included in our water heater replacement in Oklahoma City

A replacement should leave you with a better installation than the one you had, not just a newer tank. Every job includes:

  • Sizing and selection. Tank size, fuel type, recovery rate and efficiency matched to your household and the space.
  • Removal and haul-away. We drain and disconnect the old heater and take it with us.
  • Gas or electrical connection. A new gas connector and a shutoff check on gas units, or a verified connection on electric units.
  • Venting. Vent pipe and clearances set up for the new heater, including power-vent or direct-vent models.
  • Safety piping. A new temperature and pressure relief valve with properly run discharge piping, plus a drain pan where needed.
  • Startup and testing. Fill, purge, light or power up, check for leaks and set the temperature.

Signs it's time for a new water heater

  • Water seeping from the tank body or pooling under the heater
  • Rusty hot water that does not clear after running the tap
  • A heater past 10 years old that needs a major part
  • Rumbling and popping that flushing no longer helps
  • Hot water that cannot keep up with your household anymore
  • Repeat repairs within a year or two

ENERGY STAR warns that waiting until a heater fails often limits you to inefficient models with high operating costs, because you are choosing in a hurry. Planning ahead gives you time to compare options.

Winter Water Heater Replacement

A lot of water heaters that were limping along in the fall finish failing in January and February. Colder incoming water means the heater runs longer to reach temperature, and a corroded tank or worn burner gets pushed past its limit. That is why winter water heater replacement is so often an emergency rather than a plan.

When a tank fails in a cold snap, we focus on three things:

  • Getting hot water back fast. Common gas and electric sizes can often be replaced the same day.
  • Protecting the new install. Heaters in garages and attics get their supply lines and relief valve piping insulated, and we look for drafts that blow out pilots.
  • Choosing a model that suits winter. EPA WaterSense notes that heat pump water heaters may lean on backup heating when the surrounding air drops below about 40°F, so a cold garage can erase much of their savings. A high-efficiency gas or electric tank may fit better there.

Oklahoma City hit minus 14°F on February 16, 2021, according to the Oklahoma Climatological Survey. Cold like that is when tired heaters give out, so one that is already past its prime is worth replacing before winter rather than during it.

Freeze season is here in Oklahoma City.

Frozen pipes, burst pipes, split hose bibs and sprinkler backflow damage. We answer 24/7 when the temperature drops. See our winter plumbing services.

Our water heater replacement process

  1. Assess the old install. We note the size, fuel, venting, gas line, shutoffs and space, and flag anything that needs correcting.
  2. Recommend the right unit. You get clear options with prices, including efficiency upgrades where they make sense.
  3. Shut down and drain. We turn off water and fuel, drain the old tank and remove it.
  4. Set and connect. The new heater goes in level, with new supply connections, a gas connector or electrical hookup, and proper venting.
  5. Safety piping and pan. The relief valve discharge runs to an approved location, and a drain pan goes in where needed.
  6. Start up and check. We purge the tank, check every joint, test the vent draft on gas units and set the temperature to 120°F, the setting the CPSC recommends, unless you need otherwise.

Replacement options compared

TypeBest forWatch out for
Standard gas tankHomes with natural gas and a sound existing ventVenting and draft must be right for safe operation
ENERGY STAR gas tankGas homes that want lower operating costHigher price up front, and some models need different venting
Standard electric tankHomes without gas serviceSlower recovery than gas for back-to-back showers
Heat pump water heaterElectric homes with a roomy space that stays mildNeeds a 40°F to 90°F space and plenty of air around it
TanklessSteady demand, tight spaces, long-term ownersOften needs a larger gas line and new venting

ENERGY STAR says a certified gas storage water heater uses 8 percent less energy than a standard model, and a certified heat pump water heater can save a household of four about $550 a year compared with standard electric. What affects the cost of water heater replacement

We quote the actual job after we see the space. The main cost drivers:

  • Type and size. Tank capacity, fuel and efficiency rating make the biggest difference.
  • Venting changes. Moving to a power-vent or direct-vent model, or correcting an old vent, adds labor and materials.
  • Gas line work. A larger heater or a new location may need gas line repair or new gas piping.
  • Location. Attic and tight closet installs take more time than a garage floor.
  • Code corrections. Relief valve piping, drain pans, shutoffs and clearances that were wrong on the old install.

Water heater replacement in Oklahoma City: local factors

The codes just changed. The Oklahoma Uniform Building Code Commission adopted the 2024 editions of the International Residential Code and the International Plumbing Code, effective September 14, 2026, replacing the 2018 editions. A heater installed years ago may not match current requirements for venting, relief valve discharge or drain pans, and a replacement is the natural time to correct that.

Oklahoma City lists plumbing as a trade permit and requires plumbing contractors to be licensed by the state and registered with the city to work inside city limits. We pull permits when the job calls for one. Many local homes also keep the heater in a garage or attic, so we pay close attention to drain pans, drafts and freeze exposure on those installs.

If your current heater might still have life in it, start with water heater repair and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth fixing. You can also see everything we do across Oklahoma City.

Local, licensed and insured

Why Oklahoma City chooses us for water heater replacement

Licensed

Installed to code by a licensed Master Plumber

Every replacement is done by our licensed, insured plumbers. A water heater job is more than swapping tanks. Gas connections, venting, relief valve discharge piping, drain pans and shutoffs all have to be right for the heater to run safely for years. We do it right the first time, so you are not calling back about a draft problem or a weeping fitting.

24/7

Emergency swap-outs any day of the year

Tanks rarely fail at a convenient time. When yours starts leaking on a Saturday night or the coldest day of winter, call us. We answer 24/7, help you shut off water and fuel to the heater, and move fast on getting a working unit in. Same-day replacement is often possible for common sizes, so your family is not heating bath water on the stove.

Since 1985

Sizing advice from four decades of installs

Our plumbing experience goes back to 1985, long enough to know the right replacement is not always the same size as the old one. A growing family, a new soaking tub or a home office in the garage can all change the answer. We look at how many people use hot water, which fuel you have and where the heater sits before recommending a size or type.

These guys were great! A breath of fresh air from the usual contractor/service. They cared about fixing the problem not how much they can charge. I had a same day service need, leak in between floors, the day before a trip. They came out same day and presented multiple solutions as well as keen explanations.

Water Heater Replacement questions, answered

How do I know it is time to replace my water heater instead of repairing it?

Replace it when the tank itself leaks, when it is past about 10 years old and needs an expensive part, or when it no longer keeps up with your household. ENERGY STAR suggests considering replacement once a heater is more than 10 years old, before you face an emergency decision. A repair still makes sense on a younger heater with one failed part.

Should I replace my gas water heater with the same size?

Often, but not always. If you regularly run out of hot water, a larger tank or a model with faster recovery may be the fix. If the kids have moved out, a smaller tank may be plenty. We ask how many people live in the home, how many showers run back to back and whether you have a large tub before recommending a size.

Is a heat pump water heater a good fit in Oklahoma City?

It can be, in the right spot. ENERGY STAR estimates a certified heat pump water heater can save a household of four about $550 a year compared with a standard electric model. It needs a space that stays between 40°F and 90°F year-round and about 1,000 cubic feet of air around it. A cold garage in January is a poor match, so location decides it.

Do I need a permit to replace a water heater?

Oklahoma City lists plumbing as a trade permit and requires plumbing contractors to be licensed by the state and registered with the city. Whether a specific swap needs a permit and inspection depends on the work involved, such as gas, venting or electrical changes. We handle the permit when one is required and make sure the installation is ready for inspection.

What happens to my old water heater?

We drain it, disconnect it and haul it away as part of the job. Draining an old tank can take a while when sediment has built up, so we plan for that. Before the new heater goes in, we check the shutoff valve, the gas connector or electrical connection, and the drain pan, so the new unit starts with sound parts around it.
