What's included in our main sewer cleanout installation in Oklahoma City
A sewer cleanout is a fitting on the main drain with a removable cap, set where a plumber can reach the line without taking anything apart inside. Our cleanout installation covers:
- Locating the line. We find where the building drain leaves the foundation and how deep it runs, using a camera and locator if needed.
- Excavation. We dig a small pit at the chosen spot, usually right outside the foundation.
- Two-way cleanout fitting. We cut in a fitting that opens both upstream toward the house and downstream toward the main.
- Riser and cap. Pipe is brought up to finished grade with a threaded cap, and a protective cover where the spot needs one.
- Testing and backfill. We run water through the line, check the joints, then backfill and tidy the area.
- Repairs to existing cleanouts. Cracked risers, lost caps and cleanouts buried below grade are rebuilt to code.
What the plumbing code says about sewer cleanouts
Oklahoma adopted the 2018 International Plumbing Code as its statewide minimum, and Oklahoma City adopted it with local amendments in February 2024. Several sections spell out where cleanouts go and how they are built:
12 ft
At the junction
A cleanout must serve the junction of the building drain and building sewer, at the junction or within 12 feet upstream of it.
100 ft
Along the sewer
Building sewers smaller than 8 inches need cleanouts at intervals of no more than 100 feet.
18 in
Room to work
Cleanouts on 6-inch and smaller pipe need at least 18 inches of clearance in front of the opening.
The code also says cleanouts must match the pipe size up to 4 inches and cannot be concealed inside walls or below grade. Oklahoma City's amendment goes further: all drain pipe that exits a structure must have cleanouts serving both directions, and backwater valves and outdoor interceptors need directional cleanouts on each side. A two-way cleanout outside the foundation checks those boxes.
Cleanout options compared
| Type | Where it goes | Good to know |
| Two-way outdoor cleanout | Just outside the foundation on the main drain | Access toward the house and toward the main from one spot |
| Single-direction cleanout | At a stack base or along an interior drain | Cleans only in the direction of flow |
| Property-line cleanout | Out near the connection on long runs | Helps on long laterals that need cleanouts every 100 feet |
| Backwater valve with cleanouts | On the building sewer where backups are a risk | Oklahoma City requires directional cleanouts on each side |
With a good cleanout in place, routine drain cleaning is quicker and less messy, because nothing inside the house has to be taken apart.
What affects the cost of sewer cleanout installation
We price the job once we know where the line is and how deep it runs. The main factors:
- Depth. A shallow line near the foundation is a quick dig. A deep one takes more excavation.
- Surface. Soil and turf are simple. Concrete, pavers or decking add cutting and patching.
- Pipe material. Tying into old clay or cast iron takes different couplings than plastic pipe.
- Pipe condition. If the pipe at the cleanout spot is cracked, a short sewer line repair may be part of the job.
- Permit and inspection. Permitted work adds fees and an inspection visit.
Sewer cleanouts in Oklahoma City: local factors
Many Oklahoma City homes sit on slab foundations, so the building drain runs under the concrete and comes out somewhere along one side of the house. Some older houses were built with only an interior cleanout, and some cleanouts have disappeared under decades of landscaping. Clay soil here also shifts with wet and dry seasons, which can crack a riser or tilt a cap below grade.
Access matters more than people think, because the line is your responsibility. Oklahoma City's Utilities Department says repairs and cleanup on private sewer lines fall to the property owner. When a backup hits, a reachable cleanout is the difference between a quick clearing and a toilet pulled off the floor. The EPA estimates at least 23,000 to 75,000 sanitary sewer overflows a year nationwide, not counting backups into buildings, and blockages are one of the causes it lists.
Using your cleanout during a backup
Sewage coming up inside? Stop running water first. If you have an outdoor cleanout and the blockage is downstream of it, slowly loosen the cap while standing to the side, and let it relieve outside. Do not put your face over the opening, and wash up well afterward. Then call us 24/7 and we will clear the line through that cleanout.
