What to do in the first few minutes after a pipe bursts

  1. Shut off the main. Look where the water line enters the house: a garage wall, a utility closet, near the water heater or in a crawlspace. Turn the valve fully clockwise, or a quarter turn on a lever-handle ball valve.
  2. Turn off the water heater. Set a gas heater to pilot or off, or switch off the breaker for an electric one.
  3. Drain the lines. Open a faucet on the lowest floor so the water left in the pipes goes down a drain instead of through a ceiling.
  4. Stay clear of electricity. Keep away from wet outlets, light fixtures and appliances.
  5. Take photos. Photograph the break and the damage before cleanup starts, for your insurance claim.

Cannot find the main, or it will not close? Call us and we will walk you through it. In Oklahoma City, the utility's customer service line can also shut the water off at the meter in an emergency.

What's included in our burst pipe repair in Oklahoma City

  • Phone triage. We help you stop the water and tell you what to expect before we arrive.
  • Finding every break. We locate the burst you can see and check for others nearby, including splits that have not started leaking yet.
  • Permanent repair. We cut out the damaged copper, PEX, CPVC or galvanized pipe and install new pipe and fittings, on the same visit whenever possible.
  • Whole-system pressure test. Before we leave, we pressurize the lines and watch for drops that point to hidden damage.
  • Moisture check and documentation. We show you where water traveled and give you photos and notes for insurance.

Emergency Burst Pipe Repair, day or night

Most bursts in Oklahoma City come with a freeze, but pipes fail in July too. Old galvanized pipe rusts through at the threads, copper wears pinholes, high water pressure strains joints, and a washer or toilet supply hose can split without warning.

Whatever the cause, emergency burst pipe repair follows the same logic: stop the water, find the failure, fix it to last. We carry common pipe sizes and fittings so a broken line can usually be fixed permanently on the first trip. If a permanent repair has to wait for access or parts, we make a safe temporary repair so you have water tonight, and we tell you exactly what still needs doing.

Freeze emergency? (405) 309-1873

Emergency Water Leak Repair After Freezing

After a hard freeze, the calls change. The ice that blocked a line overnight melts as the day warms, and that is when the leaks show up: water dripping from a soffit, a ceiling stain spreading in a back bedroom, a hose bib spraying inside the garage wall. A single cold night can leave several weak spots on one run of pipe, so a repair that fixes only the visible leak often leads to a second call.

Our emergency water leak repair after freezing treats the whole system as suspect. We repair the leaking section, then pressure-test the lines that ran through the same cold space: the attic run, the exterior wall, the crawlspace. If a line is still frozen, see our frozen pipe repair and thawing service, because thawing a pipe the wrong way can turn a split into a flood.

IBHS research on interior water damage found burst pipes are especially common when the power fails for more than 24 hours during sub-freezing weather, and it names uninsulated copper as the most problematic pipe material in extreme cold. If your power went out during a freeze, check every room once it comes back.

Our burst pipe repair process

  1. Confirm the water is off. We check the main and the water heater when we arrive.
  2. Open only what we need. We cut drywall or ceiling at the break and keep the opening as small as practical.
  3. Find the cause. Freeze, corrosion, pressure, a failed fitting or a damaged hose. The cause decides the fix.
  4. Repair. We replace the damaged section with new, properly supported pipe.
  5. Test everything. We restore water slowly and pressure-test the system.
  6. Prevent the repeat. We recommend insulation, rerouting, a pressure regulator or a new hose, depending on the cause.

What affects the cost of burst pipe repair

We price the actual repair after we see it. Where the break is, how many breaks there are, the pipe material and how much drywall must be opened all matter. Rerouting or insulating a line that keeps freezing adds to the visit but prevents the next one. Water damage is a cost of its own: the Insurance Information Institute puts the average homeowners claim for water damage and freezing at about $15,400, based on 2019 to 2023 data. Financing is available for larger repairs.

Burst pipes in Oklahoma City: why cold snaps hit so hard

The Oklahoma Climatological Survey notes that periods of extreme cold here are infrequent, and those lasting more than a few days are rare. That is exactly the problem. Houses built for heat get caught by a sudden arctic outbreak, and IBHS points to plumbing in exterior walls as a common weak spot across the southern states. On February 16, 2021, all 120 Oklahoma Mesonet stations fell below zero for the first time in the network's history. The Mesonet reported that homes and businesses across the state dealt with frozen and burst pipes, and more than 120 public water systems were damaged.

The best time to deal with a burst pipe is before it happens. Our plumbing winterization service finds and protects the lines most likely to freeze. If you suspect a slow leak from an old freeze, water leak detection will find it. For any other after-hours problem, our 24/7 emergency plumbing line is always answered. Why Oklahoma City chooses us for burst pipe repair

24/7

A real plumber answers the call

Burst pipes do not keep business hours, and the worst ones happen at night or right after a cold snap breaks. We answer 24/7, including weekends and holidays. When you call, a plumber tells you where your main shutoff probably is, how to close it, and what to do about the water heater, so the flooding stops before we even pull into the driveway.

Since 1985

Repairs built for the next freeze

Our plumbing experience goes back to 1985, and after four decades of Oklahoma winters we know that a pipe which burst once in an outside wall will burst again unless something changes. So we fix the break, then tell you what caused it and what it takes to keep that line from freezing again. Licensed plumbers handle the repair, and we pull the permit when the work calls for one.

What our customers say

4.9 out of 5 from 88 Google reviews

These guys were great! A breath of fresh air from the usual contractor/service. They cared about fixing the problem not how much they can charge. I had a same day service need, leak in between floors, the day before a trip. They came out same day and presented multiple solutions as well as keen explanations.

Burst Pipe Repair questions, answered

What should I do first when a pipe bursts?

Shut off the main water valve. It is usually where the line enters the house, often in the garage, a utility closet or near the water heater. Then turn off the water heater, open a faucet on the lowest floor to drain the lines, and keep away from wet outlets and fixtures. Call us while you do it, and we will talk you through each step.

Should I turn off my water heater after a pipe bursts?

Yes, once the main is off. A tank that keeps heating while water drains out of the system can be damaged. On a gas heater, turn the control to pilot or off. On an electric heater, switch off its breaker. If the burst is on the hot side, closing the cold valve on top of the heater may stop it while the rest of the house keeps cold water.

Why did my pipe start leaking days after the freeze?

Ice can split a pipe or push a fitting apart without any leak while it stays frozen. The water comes when the ice melts, which can be hours or days later, often inside a wall or ceiling. That is why we pressure-test the whole system after a hard freeze, not just the pipe you can see leaking.

Does homeowners insurance cover burst pipes?

It depends on your policy and the cause, so call your agent early. Coverage questions often turn on whether the damage was sudden and whether the home was heated. We document what we find with photos and a written description of the failed pipe and the repair, which helps you make your case with the adjuster.

Who do I call if water is coming up at the meter or in the street?

Water in the street, at the curb or in the meter box should be reported to Oklahoma City Utilities Customer Service. The city can also shut water off at the meter in an emergency if you cannot close your own main. A leak on your side of the meter, between the meter and the house, is work for a plumber.
