What Edmond's water does to a water heater
Edmond's 2025 water quality report lists three sources: Arcadia Lake, about 60 city wells in the Garber-Wellington aquifer, and water bought from Oklahoma City. The city blends well water with lake water on purpose, to lower total organic carbon and limit disinfection byproducts. The same report lists dissolved minerals in the supply, with sodium sampled as high as 115 milligrams per liter in 2025.
Heating water drives some of what is dissolved in it out of solution, and in a tank it settles to the bottom as sediment. On a gas heater, that layer sits between the burner and the water, so you hear popping and rumbling and pay to heat the sludge before you heat the water. On an electric heater, it can bury the lower element until it burns out. A yearly flush slows the buildup, and an anode rod check tells us how much corrosion protection the tank has left.
Winter water heater repair in Edmond
The coldest weeks are when heaters quit. Incoming water is colder, showers run longer, and a tank that was barely keeping up in October falls behind in January. In February 2021, when Oklahoma City hit minus 14°F, Edmond Electric asked customers to conserve both electricity and natural gas for at least 48 hours during a regional power emergency. That is a hard week to lose hot water, and it is exactly when a weak thermocouple, a worn element or a failing gas valve gives out.
On winter calls we check the things cold weather exposes: the burner and pilot on gas units, both elements and thermostats on electric units, the venting on a gas heater sitting in a cold garage, and the temperature and pressure relief valve.
Our water heater repair visit
- Ask the right questions. Age of the tank, fuel type, and when the problem started tell us where to look first.
- Test, don't guess. We check the thermocouple, gas valve and burner, or the elements and thermostats, before replacing anything.
- Repair the failed part. Many repairs are done in one visit with parts we carry.
- Flush and check. We drain sediment, look at the anode when it can be reached, and confirm the relief valve works.
- Give you the honest picture. If the tank itself is leaking, we tell you a repair will not hold.
Our main water heater repair page covers the full range of parts and brands we work on.
Repair or replace in an Edmond home
The median Edmond home was built in 1996, according to Census estimates, so plenty of houses here are on their second or third water heater. A repair makes sense on a tank with a sound shell and one failed part. A tank that leaks from the body, or one with heavy sediment and a badly pitted anode, is usually near the end. When the choice is close, we give you both prices and let you decide. Learn more about local homes and water on our Edmond plumbing page.
