Drain cleaning in Mustang, house by house
Mustang grew in waves, and drains age along with the house. Fewer than 200 people lived here in 1960, according to the Oklahoma Historical Society. Today the Census Bureau's five-year survey splits Mustang's housing into the decades below, and each group tends to clog for its own reasons.
| Decade built | Mustang homes (ACS 2020 to 2024) | Common clog causes |
| Before 1970 | About 975 | Older drain materials, heavy buildup, roots entering at joints |
| 1970s | About 1,400 | Kitchen lines narrowed by decades of grease, roots under mature trees |
| 1980s | About 1,700 | The same aging pattern, plus worn tub and shower drain parts |
| 1990s | About 1,100 | Kitchen and laundry clogs, early buildup in the main line |
| 2000s | About 2,000 | Hair and soap in bath drains, laundry lint, overloaded disposals |
| 2010 and later | About 1,400 | Mostly everyday clogs from use rather than pipe condition |
Age doesn't decide everything. A newer home with a busy kitchen can clog faster than an older home with careful owners. But when a 1970s or 1980s house keeps backing up at the lowest drain, the main line itself deserves a closer look.
City sewer or septic changes the approach
Most houses within Mustang's limits drain to the municipal sewer, while a place out in the country may send its wastewater to a septic tank in the yard. The Oklahoma DEQ notes that periodic pumping is essential to keep a septic system working, and on those properties a slow house drain can mean a full tank rather than a clogged pipe. We check before we cable, because pushing a clog toward a full tank solves nothing. We also skip harsh chemical drain openers, which are hard on septic systems and on older pipe.
Our drain cleaning process
- Ask and locate. We find out which fixtures are slow and whether the problem is one drain or the whole house.
- Clear the line. We match the machine to the pipe, from a small auger on a bath drain to a larger cable through a cleanout for the main.
- Check the result. We run water through every affected fixture to confirm it drains at full speed.
- Look inside when it keeps happening. For repeat clogs, a camera shows roots, sags or broken pipe, so you know whether cleaning is enough.

Roots in mature Mustang yards
Trees planted when Mustang's 1970s and 1980s subdivisions were new have had four or five decades to grow. Roots chase the moisture at sewer joints, then spread into a mat inside the pipe that snags toilet paper and kitchen grease, and one day the lowest drain in the house overflows. Cabling clears them for a while. If roots keep coming back, a camera inspection followed by root removal, or a repair of the joint they're entering, is the long-term fix.
