Is a tankless water heater right for your Mustang home?

A gas tankless heater fires a much larger burner than a tank heater, but only while hot water is running. That burst of demand is where many installs go wrong. Mustang follows the International Fuel Gas Code, which governs how gas piping is sized for the combined load of every appliance on it. Piping that comfortably fed a tank heater, a furnace and a range may not carry a whole-house tankless unit without upsizing part of the run.

Venting is the other half. Tankless units need their own vent, routed to the manufacturer's clearances, and switching from a tank often means a new vent through a wall or the roof. In Mustang's 1970s and 1980s homes, the heater may sit in a garage or hall closet with a flue sized for a tank, not for a tankless unit.

Homes built since 2000 make up roughly four in ten Mustang houses, according to Census data, and many of their original tank heaters are reaching replacement age. That's usually when the tankless question comes up. We check the gas meter, pipe sizes and vent path before quoting, so the decision is based on your house, not a brochure.

Tankless water heater flushing and descaling

A tankless heat exchanger has narrow water passages. Minerals that would settle at the bottom of a tank coat those passages instead. Mustang's city wells tap the Garber-Wellington, which the USGS classes as a calcium and magnesium bicarbonate water, exactly the chemistry that leaves scale on hot surfaces. On a private well, nothing gets blended in before it reaches the heater. Scale shows up as swinging temperatures, reduced hot water flow, or a scale or overheat code on the display.

Descaling clears it. With the isolation valves shut, we hook up hoses and a pump, run a mild acid descaler through the exchanger until the scale dissolves, rinse it with fresh water and pull the inlet screen to clean out grit. The right interval depends on your water and how hard the heater works, so we set a schedule after we see how much scale the first flush removes. Units missing isolation valves get a set added, which makes every later flush quicker.

Signs your tankless unit needs repair

  • Hot water that turns cold mid-shower, then comes back hot
  • An error code on the display, especially for ignition, flame or scale
  • Low flow at hot taps while cold taps run normally
  • The unit won't fire when you open a single low-flow fixture
  • Clicking or a fan running with no hot water coming out

Our tankless installation and repair process

  1. Load check. We total your gas appliances and check the meter and piping against the new unit's rated input.
  2. Plan the vent. We pick a route that meets the manufacturer's clearances and city code.
  3. Install with valves. Every unit gets isolation and flushing valves, a pressure relief valve, and a condensate drain where the model needs one.
  4. Permit and test. We pull the City of Mustang permit, leak-test the gas piping and confirm temperature and flow at the fixtures.

Why Mustang calls us for tankless water heaters

Licensed

Gas and venting done by licensed plumbers

Many tankless problems trace back to gas supply and venting, not the heater itself. Our licensed team, with plumbing experience going back to 1985, sizes the gas piping to the Fuel Gas Code Mustang has adopted and routes the vent to the manufacturer's clearances. That's the difference between a unit that runs quietly for years and one that keeps throwing error codes.

40+ yrs

Descaling built around Mustang water

With more than 40 years in the trade, we know what mineral-rich well water does inside a heat exchanger. We flush and descale tankless units, clean inlet screens, and add service valves where an installer left them out, so maintenance takes less time and costs less. We'll also tell you if water treatment would cut down how often your unit needs descaling.

24/7

Repairs any hour of the day

A tankless heater that locks out on a winter night leaves you with no hot water at all, because there's no stored tank to fall back on. We answer 24/7, read the error history, check ignition, flame sensing, gas pressure and flow sensors, and get the unit firing again whenever parts allow. These guys were great! A breath of fresh air from the usual contractor/service. They cared about fixing the problem not how much they can charge. I had a same day service need, leak in between floors, the day before a trip. They came out same day and presented multiple solutions as well as keen explanations.

Tankless Water Heaters in Mustang: common questions

How often should a tankless water heater be descaled in Mustang?

It depends on your water and how much hot water you use. Mustang's water comes from groundwater carrying calcium and magnesium, so scale builds faster than it would on soft water. Follow the maker's manual as a minimum, and let us check the unit after the first flush. How much scale comes out tells us whether once a year is enough or it needs more frequent service.

Will my existing gas line work for a tankless heater?

Sometimes, but not always. A tankless burner is much larger than a tank heater's, and the gas piping has to carry it plus your furnace, range and other appliances at the same time. We measure the run from the meter, total the loads and size the pipe to the Fuel Gas Code. If a section is undersized, we replace just the part that needs it.
