Moore's water heaters come due in waves
Moore's housing was built in bursts, and water heaters wear out on the same schedule. Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 count about 4,800 Moore homes built from 2000 to 2009 and about 4,300 more from 2010 to 2019. Those decades followed two disasters: the May 3, 1999 tornado, which the Oklahoma Historical Society says damaged over 3,000 Moore homes, and the May 20, 2013 storm that NWS Norman found had dealt EF4 or EF5 damage to more than 300. A tank installed in a 2014 rebuild has now been heating water for more than a decade. A home built in the early 2000s may already be on its second.
The older half of town is on a different clock. Houses from 1960 through 1989 account for roughly half of Moore. Those houses have been through several water heaters already, and each swap may have left behind something we have to correct: a flue pipe that no longer fits well, a gas connector that should have been replaced, or a relief valve line that was never run to a safe spot.
Winter water heater replacement
A lot of tanks fail in January, when the incoming water is coldest and the heater runs hardest. A winter water heater replacement has a few extra steps. We make sure the gas supply and venting are sound before relighting in a cold garage, protect any new supply lines that run along an outside wall, and confirm the new heater can keep up with icy incoming water. If you are without hot water during a cold snap, we prioritize getting a working heater in place first.
How the replacement goes
- Look before we quote. We check the space, the venting and the gas or electrical supply.
- Agree on the heater. You choose from options that fit the space and your budget.
- Swap and update. Old tank out, new one in, connections and safety devices brought up to code.
- Test and walk through. We light or power the heater, check for leaks and draft, and show you the shutoffs.
