What Moore's water does to a tank
Moore's water comes from two places. City wells supply much of it: the 2025 water quality report counts 23 of them, plus a connection that brings in treated water from Oklahoma City. The wells draw from the Central Oklahoma aquifer, and USGS sampling found that shallow wells in that aquifer carry higher levels of calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate, the minerals that drop out of water as it heats.
Inside a tank, those minerals settle as sediment. On a gas heater, the layer sits right on top of the burner, so the heater runs longer and the bottom of the tank runs hotter. You hear it as popping or rumbling. On an electric heater, sediment can bury the lower element until it burns out. The fix is often simple, a flush or a new element, if it is caught before the buildup has damaged the tank. If your home runs on a private well near the edge of town, have the water tested, because the city's report does not cover it and well water can carry more of these minerals.
Winter water heater repair in Moore garages
Many Moore homes, especially slab ranch houses, keep the water heater in the garage. That spot works fine most of the year. In a cold snap, the tank is losing heat to freezing air while the water coming in from the street is at its coldest, so the burner or elements run almost nonstop. Weak parts fail under that load. When Oklahoma City hit minus 14°F on February 16, 2021, its second-lowest reading on record, any tank in an unheated garage was working about as hard as it ever will.
Our winter water heater repair covers the cold-weather failures: pilots blown out by drafts, thermocouples that finally quit, frozen or split supply connections at the top of the tank, and relief valves that start weeping. We also look at the flue, because a cold garage with a door left open can pull combustion gases the wrong way.
Our repair process
- Check safety first. We confirm the gas, venting and relief valve are working before anything else.
- Diagnose the failed part. We test, not guess, so you only pay for the repair you need.
- Repair and flush. We replace the part and flush sediment when the tank needs it.
- Give you the honest outlook. If the tank is near the end, we say so, so a failure does not catch you by surprise.
